I went into the Letterpress studio on Saturday to make cards for 2010. I went in not knowing what I was going to do but 2010 was obviously the theme. I used the vast array of wood type and just began playing around. First with the large FUTURE text because we all know 2010 is officially when flying cars make their debut and flying cars = The Future! Also we’re in the decade that Marty McFly arrives from the past. Can you believe we’re finally going to get hoverboards!? Anyways, I played around with different colors and varied the amount of ink on press. Double sided of course. I then looked around for some numbered type and laid that out to overprint. I love the layered look! So fun. I then took the master sheets and cut them up into cards to send out. I couldn’t resist keeping some master sheets to hang on my wall though. Printed all on Crane Lettra Pearl white.

It’s Holiday time and I decided to make my own cards (that’s me on the left and my wife on the right) since I have access to some letterpresses now. I had the plates made and booked some time on the presses. This is my first go at printing anything “real” myself and I’m quite pleased with the outcome. I was a little worried about aligning the 2 plates since it had to be done by hand but it came out nice. After I was comfortable printing I decided to have fun with different inks, blind hits and wiping most ink off the rollers so only a slight tint printed. Super fun and can’t wait to print more projects. Next time I’m going to utilize the huge array of wood and metal type. F-U-N

Took a letterpress workshop at The Arm NYC this past Sunday and it was super fun. It's only 2 blocks from my house and now I can go there whenever I want, pay $15/hr and print my own work. NYC is getting better everyday.
There was an array of wood and metal type. You can also get plates made from your art (elsewhere) and print from that. The small Vandercook hand crank press. Handset metal type. It makes you appreciate the art before computers. It's REALLY difficult and time consuming to handset type, especially if you mix and match typefaces. I created these fun business cards on the C&P Pilot press. It's actually really small and simple to use. I'll own one of these someday.

I'm taking a workshop at The Arm NYC and am very excited to be hands on in the process of letterpress. I'm definitely a hands-on kind of person and too much computer screen time hurts my brain. Excited to use their facilities after this workshop.
